Morning Coffee

That’s one down!

For those of you that couldn’t make it on Thursday, the first Morning Coffee went pretty well. Sure there were some technical difficulties at times and I can’t say I was my calmest, but in general it was a success and should be a good basis to build on for more elaborate shows in future.

We filmed in two parts and used the projector to show this week’s episode and in general it worked. Next time I need to make sure I brief our camera people better and check the audio levels before hand, but in terms of things that could go wrong, it went really well!

We’re hoping that at future shows we can get some live music and a competition or two going, you know, really make a night of it. This week there’s not going to be Morning Coffee on the main stage, but there will be next week and we’re hoping we can have an even better night now we know what to expect. In the meantime the union is going to be filled with Napier’s Music society (NUMS) and Napier Snowsports Club (NUSC) which should give us a good chance for some networking and a few drinks, maybe even a contest of kinds. Join us!

It was good to be able to provide so many people for the union as we love our union. It’s not as epic as some of the other student unions out there, but it’s ours and it is home. Maybe that sounds a bit crazy, but I happen to like a bar where the staff are my friends, remember my drinks and know what to expect when we get the cameras out.

Perhaps we’ll do more “on the couch with” Morning Coffees too, as we’ve got a few plans, as always. Hope to see you at the union this Thursday!

On The Couch with Debbie from Edinburgh Style

A little while ago I found a blog dedicated to fashion in Edinburgh, focusing on some of the interesting and sometimes just outright strange outfits that can be seen on the streets of our beloved city.

In essence it was a project for a Queen Margaret student, but it seemed considerably more interesting than many other dissertations I’ve encountered and it piqued my curiosity.

After a bit of hunting around I was able to find a way to get in touch with the author, who turned out to be one Debbie Chapman. A month or so later I received a very sunny reply from her. It turns out she has now finished her degree and moved away but would be back in Edinburgh for a day or two in the near future and willing to talk to us. Don’t worry, ma’am, we’re from the Internet.

Through a lot of luck on our part and sheds of patience on hers, we were able to meet up with her to have a quick chat with us on the couch. This also means she has the (possibly dubious..) privilege of being the focus of the first bit of Morning Coffee content NapierTV has ever released. Nice one!

I would really like it if someone else would take up the mantle from Debbie and continue to bring us some of the most interesting street fashion Edinburgh has to offer. It’s always fun to read about something interesting going on here.

Morning Coffee!

Morning Coffee might be familiar to some of you already, if you watched the Napier Subculture Podcast. For the rest of you, it’s going to be a little trickier to explain, but I’ll give it a go!

Morning Coffee itself is a casual, general channel. You’ll see morning coffee on pretty much every episode at the start and end of the show and you’ll have a chance every week to be involved in the filming of it. In terms of content you can expect to see a bit of internal society news, a run down of what’s going to be in the episode and the occasional on the couch.

The channel is a bit of an odd one as it is important, but specifically non-specific. It doesn’t have a particular area of topics to cover, unlike the other channels, but it does have a clearly defined role. You’ll see what we mean soon, we promise.

Finally, we’re planning on making it the filmed component of a live recording at the NSA Union Bar every week. There’ll be a premiere screening of the latest episode, maybe some live music and some other stuff too. We’re still hammering out the details but we reckon it’ll be great fun. We might tie it in with a few other things and it’d be great if some other societies and clubs would be interested in helping out with the idea.

It should also be noted that “Morning Coffee” is an exclamation, the equivalent of “cheers”, feel free to use this with the #morningcoffee Twitter tag. Really it shouldn’t be used with coffee though and definitely never in the morning!
